2048 tips

A good board gives you choices. These habits can make those choices easier to see, although random new tiles mean no strategy guarantees a win.

Give your largest tile a home

Choose a corner for your largest tile and try to keep it there. Arrange smaller tiles next to it so you can build toward that corner. Before moving away from it, check whether the largest tile could become trapped elsewhere.

Preserve empty spaces

Empty cells give you room to bring matching values together. When the board starts filling up, look for a move that creates a merge or opens a useful lane, rather than simply pushing numbers around.

Keep a readable order

Try to arrange tiles from large to small along an edge, then continue through the next row. An orderly chain helps you see which number you need next and reduces the chance of a small tile blocking a large pair.

Think about both possible spawns

Before a move, imagine a new 2 appearing in an awkward empty square. Sometimes a move with fewer immediate points leaves a safer board than a large merge that breaks your arrangement.

Use powerups with a purpose

In Standard and Plus, read the powerup’s instructions before selecting tiles. Undo can recover a mistake; Swap can connect a separated pair. Classic mode removes this fallback, making it a useful place to practice planning.

Pause when the board gets crowded

Fast swipes can hide a useful combination. Take a moment to inspect every row and column, especially when only a few spaces remain.

Practice in Classic or review the rules.
